In this epistolary novelette, vignettes from the life of Armenian expatriates living in colonial-era Madras are illuminated by letters, which have supposedly been found in an old building on the erstwhile Armenian Street. The author has liberally peppered the correspondence with hints and clues, but the reader will still have to do a little internet research to wade through the text. The picture that emerges shows how, in the cosmopolitan melting-pot that was Madras, the emigres were able not only to start their own newspaper, but to begin dreaming of a political experiment called constitutional democracy, and to hatch an audacious plot for national regeneration.
